Do You Need a Sailing License in Spain?

To enjoy boating in Spain, you don’t necessarily need a license. You can legally pilot a recreational vessel without a sailing license in Spain if:

• The boat is up to 5 metres in length (or 6 metres for sailing boats),
• The engine power does not exceed 11.26 kilowatts,
• You remain within 2 nautical miles of the coastline,
• You are at least 18 years old.

However, if you’re planning to handle larger boats or rent a boat in Spain such as a jet ski or yacht, a valid sailing license will be required.

Required Documents for Boating in Spain

If you’re piloting your own boat, you must carry:

• Valid ID
• Proof of ownership
• Vessel registration
• Boating insurance documents
